I have been on 7 trips with Captain John in the last year. His knowledge of the Niagara River and how to take trophy fish out of it is incredible. He is a fun guy to fish with and you'll have a great time swapping hunting and fishing stories with him as you fish. And just as important as when you fish with him is when you don't. Several times I have had John call and tell me not to come down because the river conditions were poor. Most guides would take your money and then take you for a boat ride, knowing full well you won't catch many fish. Not John. Our trips in October and November for lakers generally average 15-20 lakers and 2-3 steelhead per outing. We have averaged 15 steelhead per trip on winter outings. Great fishing, great guy.

My fishing friends and I have had several fishing trips in the Niagara River as well as Lake Ontario with John, we have always caught our share of fish in both areas. We have caught fish when no one else seemed to be doing anything. John is a great guide, we will be coming back on a regular basis. Also other friends of mine are starting to use John's service. I had a great time fishing with you on the 24th. I really appreciate you taking us out this time of the year. I will be sure to look you up again the next time that I'm in town. The guys in Virginia won't believe the size of the steelhead we caught. I'll be sure to mention your name to all the guys on the ship. I hope you have a Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year. Thanks John;
Fished with John on December 23,1999.
John is a great guide and person. My son
and I enjoyed our trip with him. We
caught alot of great fish for the river
conditions (muddy and windy). John gave us some useful tips that allowed us
to catch steelhead on our own the following day. The niagara river is a great fishery and hopefully it will remain that way for years to come. I
recommed a trip with John for anyone wanting to enjoy a great fishing trip!
Thanks again John!

I've had the pleasure of fishing with Capt. John on a few occasions, each of which, has produced large quanties of trout. I often entertain clients aboard John's charter and have found it to be one of the most effective ways to build strong working relationships. Captian John's professionalism, along with his ability to "put you on fish" possesses me to recommend him to my friends and colleagues.

I fish the lower niagara every week from shore. I fish the Devil's Hole area. Before X-mas I was catching 5 fish per outing. Since the wind kicked up I have only connected once or twice, with a few no fish outings. Before the muddy water, I was getting a heavy bite on white bucktail jigs and little cleos, most on yellow with red dots.

With the mud I have be getting fish on #5 or #6 Super Vibrax, Flo Orange, Flo Green, and Rapala Rattlin Raps in firetiger.

Good luck out there and let me know if other shore anglers are having luck with other presentations.

I went fishing for the first time in Devil's hole.I think the recent wind and muddy conditions hurt our chances at some fish. I fished with famed angler Bobby Kiehl. We used little cleos, but did not get any bites. We still had a great time. The walk back up to the parking lot was very tiring, I DO NOT RECOMMEND it for the faint of heart.Looking foward to more trips this week when water settles a bit

Shore fishing this Saturady & Sunday was cold!!! The river was pretty ice free on Saturday, but got more chunky as the day went on Sunday.

No Bows this weekend, just lakers. All fish came on large emeral shiners, fished on a three way right on the bottom.

All our bobber presentations were ignore. We floated egg sacs, ice flies and yarn flies with no hook ups.

I hope to read other shore anglers reports. Let share the wealth.

We will hope for warmer weather and fishing next weekend. Good Luck!

First fish in the boat was Katie's 27"- 12lb Brown,WOW what a fish! We went on to catch& release several nice steelhead (daddy got a little picky after seeing that big brown)and was rewarded with a beautiful 14lb steelhead,we had several others on and off. The trip up the gorge is awsome, I would highly recommend this trip to anyone,I know I'll be back, and dont be afraid to bring the kid's. Thanks again, Scott

Shore fishing from Devils Hole continues to be slow. Saturday we caught fish on shiners and brown trout egg sacs. Only 3 fish for 6 hours of fishing, but who's counting.

Sunday was no different, however we saw no other shore anglers brave the snow and blizzard conditions (although several boaters were out). We got 2 steelhead, both on shiners.

Have a great week.

Other anglers please post your outings so we can all learn from each other.

As usual, our trip to the beautiful Niagara was a huge success (at least for one of the boats). Captain Phil lead us to some great fishing, I don't think a period of 5 minutes passed without a fish on. During our three last drifts we had doubles on each time.
As for Captain Minnow and First Bait, they were seen purchasing fish from other boats. There was a friendly wager for a nice dinner, loosers buy. Well needless to say, Minnow and Frist Bait would stop at nothing to win. We believe that they even went as far as take a fish off the wall at the hotel and put it in the pile for measuring!
Cheating or not, we all had an outstanding time and caught a lot of fish. We're looking forward to next year!

The 25 lb Salmon that Bob Z. hauled in was clocked at 35 minutes of fight time according to my video camera's clock. If you ask Zeke or Greg, they would chalk all of that fight up to our selection of brewski. Not the fish, just Bob. Greg wants to know if the fishing is better off the red can or at Sundowners?

I live in the Pacific northwest and was just watching your show on the Northeast Great Outdoors show. I must say I was appalled at the way you handled the steelhead you released! You are NEVER supposed to put your fingers in the fishes gill plates! You could have and probably did harm many of those fish you caught. The gill rakers are the most fragile area on a fish and putting your hands and fingers in these areas is a dangerous practice! I would suggest you if you intend to release the fish you have on to not even net them. Our guides out here in Oregon would never handle fish the way you do. Being on TV and saying you've fished for steelhead for 20 years you should know better! I shudder to think of the amount of fish you've damaged or killed handling them the way you do. You would never get away with that out here. Shame on you!

John put us on fish both days even though the conditions were terrible. The water was so dirty that we could not see the fish to net, until it was about 6-10 inches below the surface. Fishing on the bar was very good on friday the 28th. The wind was sw and the fish were holding off the ledge in about 40-35 ft. and turned on around 1:00 pm,hooked up with 10 lakers only 3 were in the slot, the rest were averaging 32". Saturday the fish were set in the edge of the hawg trough, the wind was w for the most part and the hook ups were really good for about 4 hours. Had one drift produce a triple, and about every other drift or so one of the three of us would hook up.Our total for the day was 21 lakers 5 being in the slot. The rest 30-38". Made a run to devils hole aound 4:00 pm. and my freind picked up a nice steelie and we called it a day.Sunday the 30th the wind was hard out of the north making it tough to get a drift over the ledge, so I marked some fish in about 54 ft and ran drifts through were the fish were marking and picked up one nice laker but that was all we caught on the bar so we moved into the river and drifted along the edge in about 35'-45' and I hooked into something big I couldn't gain any ground finally it took a deep run straight down and I felt some major head shaking and snaped me off. I sure wish I could had got a glimps of it just to see what it was. All in all we had a good time but I have had much better luck in the past. Maybee in a couple of weeks the smelt will start moving in good and really turn the fishing on, I guess we will just have to wait and see.
Hope to see You on the water

I tried out the winter steelhead fishing with John DeLorenzo on February 11, 2007. My first ever steelhead fishing trip. I went with a freind of mine that has booked many trips over the years with John and have heard many times of the great fishing. The weather was a touch cold but not bad if you were dressed for it. John was very knowledgeable and very helpful in telling us the techniques in catching steelhead in the river. In short time we were into the fish and caught a nice limit for our three man party. We had an earlier trip booked in January but John called it do to the river being muddy and the bite was not on. How many guides do you know that would do that instead of taking your money??? Thanks John, I had a wonderful experience and I can not wait to do it again!!!
